Girl critically injured after being struck by hit-and-run driver near St. Louis police headquarters

ST. LOUIS • A 5-year-old girl was critically injured Friday night when a driver struck her as she crossed Olive Street.

The driver stopped briefly, but then drove off, police say. Officers stopped the car a short distance away, near St. Louis police headquarters.

The girl was crossing Olive Street at 18th Street with her mother about 10:30 p.m., police said. She ran from behind her mother and was struck by a 2005 Ford Focus with five people inside.

The driver, 19, stopped and got out, but then got back in the Focus and left, heading west on Olive, police said. Officers stopped the car at 20th and Olive streets.

The girl was taken to a hospital in critical and unstable condition.

Charges had not been filed.
