Screen Shot 2015-11-03 at 7.53.26 PMST. LOUIS (KSDK) – The mothers of two victims killed crossing the same stretch of South Broadway want the city to make the street safer.

Bapi Gupta was killed June 28th by a hit and run driver. Amber Wood died the same way in almost exactly the same spot back in the spring of 2012.

Together, their mothers have launched www.bapi.net which stands for Bicycle And Pedestrian Initiative. They want safety improvements made to the area just south of Busch Stadium.

And the alderman for the area says he agrees. Ward 7 Alderman Jack Coatar says new cross walks, new pedestrian signage and narrower traffic lanes could be completed by the fall.

“We can’t bring our children back. The only thing we can do now is to act so that other children or other family members don’t suffer like we have,” says Gupta’s mother Genie Dee.

The driver accused of hitting Gupta is facing charges but Wood’s family is still hoping information from the public will lead to charges against the driver who hit and killed her and left the scene.

“Amber didn’t get to come home that night,” said Georgie Busch before a crowd of supporters who lit candles in honor of the two victims and held a “vigil” along the 700 block of South Broadway.

As of late July in 2015, 16 pedestrians have been hit and killed compared to five in 2014 and an average of about 12 per year says Janet Matthews of Trailnet. “That’s a number I haven’t seen the likes of in the last ten years,” says Matthews of this year’s half year total.
