Pedestrian killed on I-55 identified as Pevely woman

St. Louis Post Dispatch – From staff reports Jul 26, 2016

A pedestrian was fatally struck late Monday night by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 55 in Jefferson County, police say.

Kerensa L. Scanlon, 31, of Pevely, was hit in the right lane of northbound I-55 at about 11:30 p.m. Monday.

The crash site was at the 183-mile marker, between Arnold and Festus.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said Scanlon was pronounced dead at the scene. A 61-year-old man from Tennessee was driving the truck that hit her. He was uninjured, police say.

Cpl. Juston Wheetley of the Missouri Highway Patrol said investigators are trying to figure out why Scanlon was on the highway. There were no stranded vehicles nearby, he said. Police will be trying to track her whereabouts that evening and put together a timeline to determine why she was there.

“She was right on the edge of the roadway,” where a guardrail is along the highway and there is a narrow shoulder, Wheetley said.

The trucker was not cited.

She was struck about a mile north of a construction zone.
